At Anchorage Farm, we strive for sheep that will do you proud in barn, pasture and show ring. Our vision is to be the first place in the country that people look to for seedstock Romneys.

Sires of 2008 lambs:

Bullock 0460, the 2005 National Champion Ram

Banklea 639/03 Twin (Imp). We thank Richard Brown for this 'top ram'

Weymouth Walk 0206B

Tresco 360/02 Triplet. He is bred and owned by Peter and Jan Wishart, Winton NZ, used by us via artificial insemination. With 400 breeding units of semen gone to the U.K. and 200 to Australia, this New Zealand ram may the most widely propagating Romney in the world. We are very pleased to be in the front row with him in the United States. He has the Wishart trait, which looks like an autosomal dominant that raises substantially the number of lambs born to progeny (Davis GH et al, Animal Reprod Sci 2006; 92:65-73) Moreover, he has strongly positive estimated breeding value for weaning weight. If you did not see the Anchorage newsletter about the Wishart trait and 360/02 Tr, you can download a PDF version here.
At the 2007 North Island Ram Sale (November) a son of 360/02, Tresco 148/03 Tw, had sired 13 (22%) of the 64 rams consigned. No other sire was so heavily represented. This was not flooding the market, however, as demand was high. Sons of 148/03 fetched an average price 44% higher than rams from all other sires and generated 30% of total prices. They included the top-selling ram and three others of the ten in the top quintile of price.
R.A. Brown (Banklea Stud) consigned the top-priced ram and had the highest average. He is no stranger to either of these distinctions.

The people who buy sheep from us do us honor. Thank you all.

We plan to consign in 2008 to the New England Sale in July and to the New York State Bred Ewe and Ewe Lamb Sale in October.

  • In 2007 we reclaimed a bit more pasture from inside the overgrown 1940s fence lines. We have about 20 acres of pasture, mostly rolling with some steeper hillsides. We use rotational grazing, fertilize with barn manure and (new this year for us) foliar spray made from kelp.

Two-Generation Genealogical Snapshot

As of March 10 2006, the following New Zealand flocks were in the family trees of our sheep at the parent or grandparent level: Anui ( founded 1945), Banklea (1917), Clay-Moor (1972), Eden Bank (1937), Green Corner (1937), Kia Ora (1949), Kikitangeo (1922), Leedsvale (1965), Meadowslea (1929), Offord (1977), The Brook (1978), View Hill (1967). Flock names in italics are no longer reported in the 2005 Flock Book.

The NZ Romney Sheep Breeders’ Association has numbered 4321 flocks since its beginning. In the 2005 flock book 130 are active, of which thirty-four were founded before the year 1950. Seven of the names on the grandparents’ roster above are from these thirty-four longest-running ones. We like that.
