Beauty Is Not Everything

A Story about Sheep in New Zealand

By Sadie Moore age 9

In New Zealand you don’t breed sheep because you think they are cute. It doesn’t matter if they are cute or not because they just have to be tough. Actually some of the sheep they breed are kind of ugly. I know that everyone likes different types of sheep except some of the farmers don’t even like the looks of the sheep they are breeding. For example, the Texels are used a lot. Some farmers don’t like the look of the Texels but they bred with them so they get lambs that will grow, be strong, get a lot of meat and live. Lucky for some farmers, they like the look of the Texels so it is a win - win situation for them because they get to have the kind of sheep they think are “cute” and they are tough.

A lot of people in NZ have Romneys and Texels. They also use Border Leicester rams on Romney ewes (which makes a Coopworth) and sometimes Cheviots on Romneys (Perendales). But most people don’t like the craziness of these. Almost everybody has Romneys because they are easy to get along with, can survive in the environment, have nice wool and grow nice lambs. The farmers try lots of combinations with their Romneys.

Basically, if you are in NZ you have to have a tough, meaty and self reliant sheep! Beauty is just a bonus. (I learned this on my trip to New Zealand, 2007)

Here's a file photo of Sadie from 2005 with a diapered amb to at her school.
