ALL AMERICAN JR SHEEP SHOW
Hi to all, I have just returned from the All American Jr Sheep Show held in East Lansing, MI. This is the first year that Romneys have participated and I am pleased to report that it was a great success. This was also my first year to attend the All American and I was very impressed with the smoothness in which it was run. The committee that runs this show has it down to a fine art and are to be congratulated.
This particular youth show encourages family participation. They have events planned for the entire weekend. This year they had a tour of Michigan State University, a swim party, lamb camp, skill-a-thon, Judging contest, Fleece contest, a Logo contest, Ad layout contest, Poster contest, Photo contest, Power Point contest, Essay contest, and a T-Shirt Design contest. There was a Three on Three basketball tournament as well. All exhibitors are encouraged to participate in every contest. They can acquire points through these contests which are then combined with their show results. The high score individual in each breed receives a silver belt buckle commemorating the All American Jr Show (also known as the Top Gun Award). A barbeque dinner on Saturday night with breakfast being provided on Saturday and Sunday mornings certainly was a nice treat. These meals were served to all participants and their family members. MSU and the All American committee went out of their way to make sure everything was as perfect as possible.
The following exhibitors participated, ranging in age from 8 to 20 years: Caitlin Plank (MI), Ethan Plank (MI), Sebastion Cousins (MI), Emily Passwaters (DE), Rachel Berninger (DE), and Sean Pence (IN). There were 6 Romney exhibitors and 34 head of romney sheep. All breed totals came to 316 youth with 1684 sheep. The kids did a great job of showing and fitting, and all seemed to have a good time in and outside of the show ring. I have to admit watching all of the kids show....not just romney kids but all the youth involved.....can't help but bring a smile to your face. Watching them interact with the sheep, each other, various adult, parents and judges helps them develop people skills, teamwork and social development. To be on the sidelines at these youth events is inspiring and I encourage and challenge all of you to give these youth our support, financially as well as personally.
For a complete listing of show results please visit the All American Jr Sheep Show web site. I would like to high light the following, if I omit anything, please feel free to let me know. Sean Pence had Champion Ram, while Ethan Plank captured the Reserve Champion Ram title (both with March lambs), Rachel Berninger had the Champion Ewe and Sean Pence had Reserve Champion Ewe (both were March lambs), Best Fleece went to Sean Pence. In the Fleece contest (off the sheep), Ethan Plank had Best Ram Fleece and Sebastion Cousins had Best Ewe Fleece, with the Champion Fleece going to Sebastion Cousins. The Ad Layout contest was won by Emily Passwaters, who also had high placings in the Photo and T-Shirt contests. Our Romney exhibitors were very active in many of these contests where the competition was tough, and their entries were very impressive. I would like to congratulate all of these exhibitors for a job well done. A special congrats goes to Ethan Plank who won the Top Gun Award. Ethan is 10 and his sister, Caitlin, is 8....both are super showman and will be a force to be reckoned with as they mature from beginner status to Seniors. Another thanks to all of the older exhibitors who helped the younger ones, your attention and expertise is what makes this youth show work. And last, but not least, I want to personally thank all the parents and interested adults who made it possible for these kids to attend this show.
Next year the All American Jr Show is heading to Harrington, DE at the DE State Fair Grounds. The dates are July 1st thru the 3rd, 2011. There are plenty of hotels available and camp grounds. Delaware has many interesting places to visit, so make it a family vacation. Romneys will be there in full force and I look forward to seeing you there. Please plan to attend.

MARYLAND LAMB AND WOOL QUEEN
Victoria Willis, 16 year old junior at Archbishop Spalding High school was awarded the title of Maryland Lamb and Wool Queen 2010-2011 on Friday, April 31st; the day before the MD Sheep and Wool Festival began. Victoria resides in Pasadena , MD. The contest began in 1972, and Victoria is the first recipient from Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Victoria raises her own herd of sheep, which she keeps at Kinder Farm Park through the Kinder Farm Park 4-H Livestock Club and also rents land in Millersville, MD for a few other sheep; in total, she currently has 7 sheep; Romney and Rambouillet sheep, and takes them to shows throughout the summer. Victoria is a junior member of the American Romney Breeders Association and has been showing and breeding Romney sheep for the past 5 years. The MD Lamb and Wool Queen contest was made possible by the MD Sheep Breeders Association. Victoria ’s duties include handing out ribbons for sheep shows at the MD State Fair, and other fairs, and doing lamb promotions throughout the year. |

ALL-AMERICAN JUNIOR SHEEP SHOW
Great news for Romney junior breeders! ARBA has committed to the participation in the All-American Junior Sheep Show for the next two years. This year the show will be in East Lansing, MI on July 2nd – 4th, 2010. Next year will be in Harrington, DE on July 1st – 3rd, 2011.
The All-American Junior Sheep Show is the premier junior sheep show in the country. Last year there were 345 exhibitors and 1900 head of sheep. If you have never attended this show please makes plans to attend this very special event. It is much more than just a sheep show with several events for the whole family. Efforts are put forth to make this an unforgettable weekend with the family. The show includes a lamb camp for the young sheep owners, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a sheep skill-a-thon, a sheep judging contest, and much more. Last year 13 breeds were represented by 23 different states. I am very happy to report that Romneys will be included in this years breed count. My personal goal is for 30 – 40 head and 5 to 8 exhibitors, but would like to challenge our youth to surpass this goal! For further information, you can go their web site www.allamericanjuniorshow.com .
Please watch for more details as they develop. This show doesn’t come cheap but our youth are worth all of our efforts. Please feel free to donate on your own or to open your heart (and purse) when you receive that inevitable phone call. Checks can be made out to ARBA and sent either to Christiane Payton in the office or to myself, Charlene Carlisle, and I can forward them to the office in a group mailing. Please make a notation that they are for the All-American Jr Sheep Show.
