ARBA Honors Jack
and Bessie Kalina
ARBA
honored Jack and Bessie Kalina at the 2007 ARBA annual banquet
at NAILE. Ed Julian narrated some of the history about Jack and
Bessie, who have dedicated many years to the association plus
promoting the Romney breed across the United States.
Jack’s
involvement with ARBA dates back to 1972 and over the years he
served on the board as President and Director for 20+ years.
He was active in promoting Romney youth; ARBA becoming incorporated
as a non-profit in Oregon; and establishing the six ARBA districts
that we use today. During this time Bessie worked along with
Jack serving as chair person for the Hospitality Committee at
the 1981 Pacific International; the 1998 National Show and Sale
committee plus countless other Romney/ARBA related activities.
The
Kalina family, now consisting of three generations, continues
today promoting ARBA. Ed called Jack and Bessie up to the front
of the banquet room to receive their gift of appreciation……a
beautiful wood carving of Jack, Bessie, a Romney and their dog
done by Glenn McCune.
Past Honors: Lynn and Ethelma Barnes, 2003

Lynn
and Ethelma Barnes were honored at the August 2003 ARBA banquet
held in Salem, OR. Folks stood up to share their stories and appreciation
of the Barnes and their Romneys. Many of the memories shared brought
laughter, some brought tears. A beautiful wood carved trophy in
the likeness of Lynn and Ethelma was presented to them. Lynn and
Ethelma say “Thanks to all!”.

STEP BACK IN TIME
The
following ad from the 1920 National Wool Grower Magazine was reproduced
in the February 2004 issue of ASI's Sheep Industry News in a features
called "Step Back in Time". Thanks to Alisse, Ramblings Junior
reporter, for passing this along.

"Mini-Romneys"
Due
to the recent publications and discussions about miniature Romneys,
your ARBA board would like the membership to know that ARBA
does not record on the certificate of registry the wording “mini” or “miniature”. Our
ARBA bylaws state: “Only Romney sheep of pure breeding shall be accepted
for registration”. “It is required when presenting application for
registration of sheep bred in the United States or Canada that there
be given the name and registration number of the sire and dam, the
sex, year, month and day of birth.”
Spin-Off Magazine Features
American Romneys
The Winter 2001 issue
of Spin-Off Magazine from Interweave
Press featured Romney wool on the cover and in an 8 page article
by associate editor Rita Buchanan. Several additional articles on projects
with Romney wool make this a must-have
issue for breeders and potential customers. ARBA members may purchase
5 or more copies at a 40% discount. Click
for details.
